Christopher Fosudo, a Nigerian Catholic priest, has been expelled from the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam.
In addition, he has been ordered to leave the country while the Country Immigration Police, on the other hand, stated that the cleric had no problems leaving the country.
According to Tanzania Times, Catholic Church leaders in Dar-es-Salaam simply terminated Father Christopher Fosudo’s services in a letter that provided little explanation for the decision.
The circular, dated August 17, 2022, was signed by its secretary, Vincent Mpwaji, and was distributed to all priests in the Archdiocese of Dar-es-Salaam.
Father Fosudo worked as the Assistant Parish Priest at the Magomeni Catholic Church in Dar-es-Salaam City during his time in Tanzania.
However, Fr Fosudo told The Citizen’s sister publication Mwananchi on Sunday that despite being allowed to continue with his duties by the Immigration Force, he intended to leave the country.
He said “It is difficult to continue staying here. I have decided to leave after consulting my Bishop in Nigeria. It is he who makes the final decision whether I should return or remain,’
According to him, he has currently requested temporary shelter at the church’s house, noting that he is willing to leave if asked. He, however, declined to reveal the reasons for his repatriation, claiming that disclosing everything in the media is unhealthy.

He stated that he arrived in the country in 2014 and taught at Jordan University in Morogoro until 2016, when he returned home, and then returned in 2017/18 for additional studies.
According to the report, the senior officer of the Dar es Salaam Immigration Police, Mr Peter Mwita, said the priest was summoned for questioning after the letter went viral on social media.
He said “We released him to continue with his responsibilities after failing to implicate him with any violations. However, the Force has received no directive from the Church or an individual.”
He stated that the police wanted to find out if there had been any violations of the country’s laws and regulations.
During the investigation, the police discovered that the priest is a PhD student at the University of Dar es Salaam (Udsm) who is in the country on a student visa obtained after completing the necessary procedures.
