This follows the far-right politician’s formal request to the President for the authority to form a government, according to Dailymail.
The election last month saw Meloni and her post-fascist Brothers of Italy party triumph, but they fell short of winning a majority. After striking a coalition deal with allies that included Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, she has now established the most right-wing government in Italy since Benito Mussolini.
The 45-year-old told President Sergio Mattarella that negotiations were finished and that she was prepared to form an administration when she arrived at the Quirinal Palace on Friday morning.
Silvio Berlusconi and Matteo Salvini, the head of the League party that is anti-immigration, are her coalition partners. Her election follows a period of political turbulence in Italy, during which shaky coalitions formed and disintegrated before technocrat Mario Draghi was chosen to run the country’s economy until elections could be held.
One frustrated pensioner summarized the rationale behind Ms. Meloni’s election last month by telling journalists: “She’s the only one we haven’t tried yet, which means she’s the only one yet to fail.”
Meloni’s success, however, is not guaranteed. She vehemently supports Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, but coalition allies Mr. Berlusconi and Lega Nord leader Matteo Salvini have expressed support for Putin.
