A young woman who became the country’s first blind and Black barrister made history there.
Jessikah Inaba, 23, qualified last week after five years of study at a university in London.
She used Braille to complete her full course, and she gives both her tutors and her friend’s credit for filling in the blanks.
Jess, who is totally blind, used Braille the entire time she was a student at the University of Law – London Bloomsbury. She began her accelerated legal studies in September 2017 and, two years later, a master’s program in addition to a professional development course.
On a particular screen, which typically displays one line at a time, or from specially printed books, Braille can be read. She claimed that it took her institution seven months and five months, respectively, to obtain one of her two important study materials so she could read it on her computer.
Additionally, she said that her Braille screen missed a significant amount of information due to the books’ illustrations and tables.
She has decided to apply for a pupillage, which is the first chamber appointment for newly qualified barristers when the application period opens in January.
