The unnamed quinquagenarian clergyman from western France was reprimanded, according to the Paris public prosecutor’s office on Thursday.
The declaration revealed that the priest was also accused of giving the victim of the assault drugs at the start of November without the victim’s knowledge.
The teenager was sexually assaulted by the indicted priest, who presided over the parish at the Saint-Louis-Marie church in Brocéliande, Brittany, in a hotel room in Paris.
According to French media reports, the victim then became ill and called friends, who then dialled 911.
The victim had claimed to be an adult on the dating app Grindr, which led to the priest’s arrest, but he claimed to the police that he was unaware that the victim was a minor.
Archbishop Pierre d’Ornellas of the diocese of Rennes, where the priest is from, has expressed shock over the incident and has offered sympathy and promised to help the victim.
The former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of France, Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, admitted to abusing a 14-year-old girl in the 1980s earlier this week, sparking a new abuse scandal that has caused controversy in the French Catholic Church.
Authorities are also looking into the confession that 78-year-old Ricard made.
According to a study released in October 2021, the Catholic Church in France has sexually abused an estimated 216,000 children and young people since the 1950s.
