On Tuesday evening, December 6 in the US, an 18-year-old made history by becoming the youngest Black mayor of Earle, Arkansas.
Smith won the race after defeating Nemi Matthews Sr. in a runoff.
Results showed that Smith received 218 votes, compared to Matthews’ 139.
Smith made the announcement of his win in a Social media post, saying: “Citizens of Earle, Arkansas, it’s official!! I am your newly elected Mayor of Earle, Arkansas… ‘It’s Time to Build a Better Chapter of Earle, Arkansas.’ I would like to thank all my supporters for stepping up getting people to the polls. I am truly grateful for you all.”
Congratulations are already coming in, and many people wish him luck in his new position.
