Remember that the old naira notes in the three denominations, as announced by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, will cease to be valid for any financial transaction beginning on January 31, 2023.
The earlier deadline for all residents to return the old N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes were recently upheld by the central bank as being final.
When some beggars rejected the old naira bills given to them by a kind stranger on Wednesday morning, there was a small drama, according to a journalist who saw the scene in Kaduna.
He claims that a young man was approached by three beggars in wheelchairs, and when he got off the bus and saw they were seeking for donations, he pulled a N1,000 bill out of his wallet and extended it to the beggar who was the oldest of the group.
He watched in delight as the beggars turned their wheelchairs around, smiled at themselves, and went away from the young man after rejecting his offer.
According to reports, several beggars in Kaduna State causes drama after they reject the new naira note given by an individual who volunteered to help them.
Speaking to onlookers, the young man who identified himself as Caleb reportedly said, “They (beggars), came to me, asking for alms. I gave them what I had on me, but they rejected it.”
