According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), The Boksburg North Visible Policing unit’s four members were detained on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.
On January 9, police officers approached the Nigerian and his friends and wanted to see their identification, according to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping.
“When the victim could not produce an original copy of the required documentation, he was taken to the police station where he was allegedly assaulted and tortured by the officers. The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention where he was in a coma for nine days,” she stated.
According to Suping, the four officers—a sergeant and three constables—are accused of obstructing justice and assault with the intent to cause great bodily harm.
The four cops were detained at the Boksburg police station after being taken into custody today at their place of employment.
