Saheed Aderinto, a Nigerian professor at Florida International University, has been named the 2023 Dan David Prize winner and shared the amazing news on his Facebook wall.
The Dan David Prize is a prestigious international honour that recognizes and funds exceptional contributions to historical research and other fields that illuminate the past of humanity.
The phrase “biggest history prize in the world” is used to describe it.
Nine winners will get a total of $300,000 to honour their accomplishments and fund their ongoing work.
The selection committee praised Aderinto’s work “for situating African history at the cutting edge of diverse literature in the history of sexuality, nonhumans, and violence, noting that it is exceptional to see a single person leading scholarship in all of these fields.”
In 1979, Aderinto was born in Ibadan. His undergraduate degree in history from the University of Ibadan came in 2004; his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin came in 2010.
He began his academic career at Western Carolina University the following year, and in 2021, he was promoted to full Professor of History. In 2022, he transferred to Florida International University.
His most recent book, “Animality and Colonial Subjecthood in Africa,” explores the historical significance of animals in Nigeria. He is now working on a book about Fuji music as well as a documentary.
Aderinto is a senior research fellow at the French Center for Research in Africa as well as the founding president of the Lagos Studies Society.
The Dan David Prize is “the new MacArthur-style ‘genius grant’ for history,” according to the Washington Post.
The awards event will take place in Israel in May, and selection is based on nominations.
Receivers must have a proven capacity for brilliance, originality, and leadership that will influence future historical research.
“They must be engaged in outstanding and original work related to the study of the human past, employing any chronological, geographical, and methodological focus,” it added.
“Prize winners must have completed at least one major project, the prize is not given for that project, but rather in recognition of the winner’s overall achievements as well as their potential for future excellence.”
