The Ogun State police command personnel detained Adekunle for reportedly selling her 18-month-old child to an unnamed buyer for the sum of N600,000.
The suspect was apprehended when the woman’s husband, Nureni Rasaq, filed a complaint at the Sango divisional headquarters, alleging that his wife, Olaide Adekunle, had been to Lagos with their infant daughter, Moridiat Rasaq, on March 15, 2023, but had returned home without her.
He continued by saying that attempts to find out what happened to the infant were futile because the mother was unable to provide any plausible explanation for the baby’s whereabouts.
Following the report, CSP Dahiru Saleh, the DPO for the Sango division, assigned his investigators to find the woman, and she was seen and taken into custody. During questioning, the suspect admitted that she had sold her child for 600,000 naira (#600,000) to someone in Lagos.
When questioned about the circumstances surrounding her behaviour, the woman responded that she had borrowed money from a microfinance bank, and when she was unable to repay it, the bank’s employees began to harass her and threatened to take drastic measures.
Olaide Adekunle, a 33-year-old lady, has been detained.
As a result, she sprinted to Lagos and began peddling sachet water. She claimed that she met a man who led her to the Lagos woman who ultimately purchased the child when she was hawking.
The acting commissioner of police, DCP Babakura Muhammed, has ordered that the suspect be transferred to state criminal investigation departments for further investigation and potential baby recovery, according to SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, a spokesperson for the state police command, who confirmed the arrest.
