In Lagos, a middle-aged man narrowly avoided being lynched, according to the Daily Trust.
On Monday morning, a crowd tried to lynch a middle-aged guy who had been found in Lagos with more than 100 dirty baby diapers and a large number of cash.
The incident sent the man aboard a Mazda commercial bus that was going to Iyana-Ipaja and carrying full cargo.
One of the bags was packed with dirty diapers when rescuers arrived on the site to give assistance.
When the rescuers enquired, they learned that the bag and its contents belonged to one of the accident victims.
According to sources, the middle-aged man’s inability to satisfactorily explain where he acquired the diapers and what he planned to do with them infuriated the rescuers.
A trader in Iyana-Ipaja named Shade Olojo claimed an angry mob had surrounded the middle-aged man and thrashed him mercilessly.
“The mob almost killed the man if not for the timely arrival of officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to the scene,” she stated.
Another witness, John Anaekwe, a local commercial tricycle driver, claimed that the crowd was shocked by the number of dirty diapers and the significant amount of cash found on the man.
“He could not explain what he wanted to do with the diapers. The crowd labelled him a ritualist and was about to kill him when the LASTMA men arrived,” he stated.
One of the crash victims passed away on the route to the hospital, according to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, who confirmed the occurrence.
He said that on Monday, LASTMA personnel at Mosalasi Round-About in the Iyana-Ipaja neighbourhood of Lagos rescued three critically injured accident victims, two of whom were male and one of whom was female.
He claimed that three cars were involved in the collision: a tricycle (Keke Marwa KJA 369 QM), a white Camry automobile (KJA 351 HG), and a commercial Mazda bus (FKJ 88 XH).
According to him, a preliminary investigation showed that the Camry’s driver lost control, crashed into a commercial tricycle from behind, and the tricycle lost balance and impeded the path of an oncoming, fully loaded Mazda commercial bus travelling to Iyana-Ipaja.
“One of the passengers inside the commercial tricycle involved in the accident was caught with more than 100 pieces of used small children’s diapers and a huge sum of money of different denominations.
“He was rescued from being lynched by a mob and was immediately handed over to the police,” he stated.
