The fire, which is believed to have started around 11:30 p.m., was successfully put out, preventing it from spreading to other areas of the palace.
It was learned that the fire began as soon as the palace’s energy supply was restored.
While confirming the incident, Moses Olafare, a spokesperson for Ooni, revealed that a power surge caused electrical appliances to explode, setting off the fire.
An apartment inside the palace of Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife, was completely destroyed by fire late Friday.
According to information obtained, the fire began as soon as the palace’s electricity supply was restored.
Moses Olafare, a representative for Ooni, confirmed the occurrence and revealed that a power surge caused electrical appliances to burst, setting off the fire.
Olafare claimed in a statement that only one building in the courtyard was harmed by the fire incident, which was immediately extinguished thanks to the combined efforts of the State Fire Service Department and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ile.
The statement read: “A building apartment within the courtyard of the Palace of the Ooni Of Ife was, at about 11:30p.m. yesterday (Friday), engulfed in flames triggered by power surge which exploded through electrical appliances in the affected apartment.
“The inferno did not spread beyond the affected building located at a section of the palace premises.
“It was swiftly put out through the combined efforts of the Government Fire Service, OAU Fire Service and Palace Emergency Control Unit.
“No casualties or injuries were recorded, and no cultural items was lost. Thanks to the Almighty Olodumare.”
