With this new feature, users can now send 60-second-long video messages to their contacts, allowing them to share moments with family and friends in real time.
In a blog post, WhatsApp claims that sending video messages is as simple as sending a voice note. The feature also lets you lock the video and record hands-free by swiping up, just like with voice notes.
Once the receiver opens the chat, the video message will start playing on mute. To hear the sound, they’ll have to tap on the video. According to the blog post, the videos are also protected with end-to-end encryption.
The feature is currently available to some users and is expected to roll out to all users in the coming weeks.
Whatsapp is pretty late with this feature, considering that it has been available on Telegram, a direct competitor for quite a while. Still, it’s better late than never and it’s a feature that could be quite useful for the 2.7 billion monthly users of the messaging app.

Recently, Whatsapp rolled out some important features including the edit button which give users a 15-minute window to edit their texts after sending them. They also introduced a feature that silences upcoming calls and they are reportedly working on introducing usernames. Again, they’re only playing catch up with some of these features which have always been available on Telegram.
These updates are coming at a time when WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta has been trying its hands at new ventures. Meta recently released Threads, a Twitter clone, sorry competitor.
