President Bola Tinubu has ordered the release of funds for the payment of pension arrears, salary increases, and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel.
This move comes after a two-day peaceful protest by military veterans at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja.
The protest, led by the Coalition of Concerned Veterans (CCV), was sparked by the non-payment of the 20% and 28% increment for 11 months. The ex-soldiers had vowed not to leave the ministry’s gate until they received credit alerts for their entitlements.
In response to the protest, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, announced that President Tinubu had ordered the release of funds to settle the outstanding entitlements. Matawalle expressed gratitude to the President for his swift intervention and commended him for ensuring the prompt payment of the three-month salary increase.
The Minister also confirmed that payment alerts for the salary increases had already been received by military personnel.
Additionally, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, promised to pay 50% of the owed entitlements and discuss other outstanding issues.
