The Nigerian military has made remarkable strides in its fight against terrorism, announcing that it has neutralized over 10,000 terrorists and arrested more than 12,000 insurgents in 2024.
This was revealed by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, during a press conference on Tuesday.
In addition to its efforts against terrorism, the military also made numerous arrests in Southeastern Nigeria, targeting members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network.
The military’s operations resulted in the neutralization of 734 terrorists, the arrest of 974 others, and the recovery of various weapons and ammunition.
It’s worth noting that the National Bureau of Statistics reported alarming figures on crime and insecurity in Nigeria between May 2023 and April 2024, including 614,937 deaths and 2,235,954 abductions.
The military’s efforts to combat terrorism have been ongoing, with notable successes in recent months. In November 2024, the Nigerian Air Force eliminated over 70 terrorists in airstrikes on Borno State.
Furthermore, over 7,283 terrorists surrendered in August 2024, with many expressing a willingness to reintegrate into civilian life.
