Bashir Ahmad, the former Special Assistant on Digital Communication to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has made a bold statement regarding Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to Bashir Ahmad, anyone advocating for Kanu’s release should be considered a sworn enemy of Nigeria.
Kanu has been in custody since June 2021, facing charges related to terrorism. His continued detention has sparked a heated debate, with some groups calling for his unconditional release to promote peace in the southeastern region.
Ahmad described Kanu as a terrorist and emphasized that he would only support Kanu’s release if the separatist leader undergoes rehabilitation and renounces his derogatory views about Nigeria and its citizens. “I can only advocate for his release when he is truly rehabilitated, so he stops seeing Nigeria as a zoo and the citizens as animals that deserve to be brutally killed,” Ahmad stated.
This statement comes as Nigerian business mogul and philanthropist, Prince Arthur Eze, assured that Igbo leaders would beg President Bola Tinubu to forgive and release Kanu. However, Ahmad’s stance suggests that advocating for Kanu’s release without conditions would be seen as a threat to national security.
The controversy surrounding Kanu’s detention and potential release continues to divide opinions, with some arguing that his release would foster peace and others believing it would undermine the rule of law.
