A coalition of 18 states has filed a federal lawsuit to block President Trump’s executive order aimed at eliminating birthright citizenship for immigrant children born in the US.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Massachusetts, argues that Trump’s initiative violates the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to those born on American soil.
According to the lawsuit, Trump’s executive order directs the federal government to stop issuing passports, citizenship certificates, and other documents to children born in the US to undocumented immigrant parents or parents who are not legal permanent residents.
The states participating in the lawsuit include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
The lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction to stop the enforcement of the executive order and ultimately aims to have it invalidated.
Trump has directed that his order should be enforced in 30 days. The outcome of this case will have significant implications for the future of immigration policy in the US.
