The Nigerian Navy has arrested eight suspected stowaways who attempted to illegally migrate to Europe by hiding on a commercial vessel, MSC Katyani.
The incident occurred off the coast of Lagos State on Friday. The suspects were detained and handed over to the Deputy Superintendent of Immigration, Dalhatu Musa, at the Lagos Ports/Marine Command in Apapa, Lagos.
According to a statement released by the Nigerian Navy, the suspects planned to reach Europe by stowing away on the vessel, which was en route to international waters.
The Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT apprehended the suspects onboard MSC KATYANI, the statement said.
The arrest is part of the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to combat illegal migration and maritime crimes in the country’s waters.
