An illegal clinic operating in the Kapwa, Gaube Community of Kuje Area Council, Abuja, has been shut down after a patient died from a botched hernia operation.
The Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC) sealed Dada’s Clinic and Maternity Ltd, which was found operating without registration and conducting medical procedures in an unfit environment.
The clinic, located in a rented apartment, lacked basic healthcare infrastructure, including proper windows, doors, toilets, and sanitary facilities. An investigation revealed that the clinic was in a dilapidated state, with an unsanitary extension used as a medical space.
Three patients admitted at the facility were immediately referred to Kuje General Hospital for proper medical care.
The operator of the clinic, identified as Mr. Sabiu, has been detained and handed over to the police for further investigation.
The Director of Medical and Diagnostics Department led the team that conducted the inspection, acting on the orders of Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the Health and Environment Secretariat.
Reacting to the incident, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike condemned the existence of illegal healthcare facilities in Abuja, declaring zero tolerance for unregistered clinics. “We cannot allow illegal facilities to put residents’ lives at risk. Every healthcare center must be properly accredited,” Wike stated.
