Edwin Kibet Koech from Kenya has emerged victorious in the men’s category of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, claiming the $50,000 first-place prize for the second time after winning in 2023.
Koech completed the 42km race in a record 2 hours and 14 minutes, outpacing thousands of competitors. The marathon, which started at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, and ended at the Eko Atlantic City, attracted over 37,000 runners who participated in the 10km and 42km races.
This year’s event marked the 10th edition of the Lagos City Marathon, which has gained a World Athletics gold label. The organizers aim to achieve a platinum label, making it the first marathon race in Africa to attain this status.
The Lagos State Government had announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion to facilitate the event, ensuring a smooth and safe experience for participants and spectators alike.
According to the General Manager of the race, Yusuf Ali, a retired Nigerian long jumper, the event saw a significant turnout, with over 60,000 runners registering to participate. However, only 37,000 received running kits, which were distributed to ensure a smooth and organized event.
Edwin Kibet Koech’s victory marks his second win in the Lagos City Marathon, solidifying his position as a top athlete in the sport. His achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring runners and athletes across Africa and beyond.
