Ekkachai Tiranarat and his wife Laksana, the Thai couple who broke the Guinness World Record for the longest kiss in 2013, have gone their separate ways.
The couple’s remarkable feat of keeping their lips locked for 58 hours and 35 minutes may have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it ultimately didn’t keep their love strong.
Ekkachai recently shared the story of their record-breaking kiss on the BBC Sounds podcast, Witness History.
He recalled the grueling experience, which involved sustaining the kiss during toilet trips and having to pass water between each other’s mouths. Despite the challenges, Ekkachai expressed pride in their achievement, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
The competition’s stringent rules made the experience far from enjoyable. Ekkachai remembered being “stunned” by the rules, which demanded that lips must be touching at all times, and the couple must be awake and standing during the attempt.
The rules also prohibited adult nappies, diapers, or incontinence pads, and contestants were required to remain kissing while using the toilet.
Despite the harsh regulations, Ekkachai and Laksana persevered and won the competition not once, but twice.
However, their victory was short-lived, and the couple eventually went their separate ways. Ekkachai reflected on their achievement, saying, “The happiness was overclouded with how tired I was. I just wanted to rest and drink.”
