A violent attack occurred in Elele, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State, on Wednesday, leaving at least four people injured.
The victims were supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who had gathered at a roundabout to show their solidarity.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen, suspected to be members of the local vigilante group, Obio/Akpor Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), stormed the area and opened fire. The attackers were allegedly led by a senior vigilante commander known as ‘Fucking Naira,’ who shot at least 14 people.
The injured victims were rushed to Madonna University Hospital in Elele for treatment. The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that four individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the attack.
The police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that the incident occurred when a patrol team arrived at Elele Roundabout to disperse an unlawful assembly. An unidentified assailant hiding nearby opened fire, injuring multiple people.
The police have apprehended one suspect and recovered a single-barrel gun. The suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
This attack comes amid growing political tensions in Rivers State, following a 48-hour ultimatum given to Governor Fubara by the Martin Amaewhule-led State Assembly to re-present the 2025 Appropriation Bill before the March 5 deadline.
