The Nigerian government has proposed extending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme from one year to two years, aiming to enhance skills acquisition and employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
This move is part of a broader effort to address youth unemployment and promote self-reliance.
The proposed extension will see the first year dedicated to skills training and entrepreneurship development, followed by a second year of traditional national service.
The NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme will be expanded to equip corps members with practical skills for job creation and national development.
The government plans to digitize NYSC processes, including verification of foreign-trained graduates, to curb certificate racketeering.
Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, believes that extending the NYSC scheme will provide young Nigerians with more opportunities to become job creators, meeting the country’s needs. The proposal aligns with the government’s vision to address youth unemployment and promote self-reliance.
The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has welcomed the proposal, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to adapting to national priorities.
The proposal is expected to undergo further consultation with relevant authorities and the public before implementation.
