A young boy who captured national attention for standing in front of Peter Obi’s campaign convoy during the 2023 general elections is now facing a harsh reality – life in Kirikiri Prison, Lagos State.
The teenager, identified as Yusuf Alimi, was reportedly arrested on allegations of theft and public fighting, which his supporters claim are false accusations.
“Do you guys remember this picture? Well, the boy standing in front of this convoy is currently languishing in Kirikiri Prison,” an X user with the handle @Hausa_girl wrote, bringing attention to his case.
Alimi’s journey to fame began when a photo of him standing in front of Obi’s convoy went viral. However, his newfound fame took a dark turn when he was apprehended by individuals in his neighborhood and taken to the police station. Supporters argue that Alimi is innocent and is suffering from public perception that he was entitled after receiving financial gifts during the election season.
“He’s just a victim,” a commentator said. “He knows the names of all the individuals who took him to the police station — even the one who stole his phone.”
The case file is currently with the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the court is awaiting legal advice on how to proceed. Alimi’s supporters, including human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, have called for his immediate release, citing his apparent innocence.
“Given the boy’s apparent innocence, immediate rescue efforts are necessary to remove him from prison; if anyone has access to his lawyers and family, kindly notify us at your earliest convenience,” Sowore said.
Alimi is currently facing charges of stealing and public fighting. His supporters are working tirelessly to prove his innocence and secure his release from prison.
