Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Yechiel Leiter as the next Israeli ambassador to the United States, just three days after Donald Trump’s election to a second term as US president.

This move is seen as a strategic decision, given Trump’s strong support for Israel.

Leiter, a US-born official, boasts an impressive resume. He previously served as chief of staff in the finance ministry, deputy director general in the Education Ministry, and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company.

Netanyahu praised Leiter as “a highly capable diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and possesses a deep understanding of American culture and politics.”

Yisrael Ganz, head of the Yesha Council, welcomed Leiter’s appointment, describing him as “a key partner in English-language advocacy for Judea and Samaria”.

Leiter’s residence in the Gush Etzion settlement area is also seen as a significant factor in his appointment.

Tragically, Leiter’s son was killed in the Gaza war against Palestinian militant group Hamas while serving with the Israeli military last year.

This personal loss may inform Leiter’s approach to diplomacy in his new role.
