Suspense as a Nigerian woman, 20, sues her father over a planned forced marriage
On Monday, the young woman begged in Kaduna’s Shari’a Court to have her father, Aliyu Muhammad, refrain from forcing her to wed a stranger.
Malam Y.A. Bulama, the complainant’s attorney, informed the court that the complainant has a loved one.
“The father wants my client to marry a man in their village in Niger state. Right now she’s living in her aunty’s house because he threatened to take her to the village and marry her off,” the counsel stated.
He pointed out that the plaintiff did not sue her father out of disdain for him.
The father claimed that when his parents were still living, they selected the groom for his daughter, and he had to respect their decision.
“I married my six daughters off in the village and they are doing well. Fatima’s mother is the brains behind her stubbornness.
“I need permission to consult with my people over this matter,” he stated.
According to Shari’a law, the judge, Malam Isiyaku Abdulrahman, a father has the right to select a husband for his daughter.
He advised the defendant to exercise patience with his daughter while pointing out that forced marriage was not encouraged.
A 20-year-old lady named Fatima has taken her own father to court.
“You are her father, therefore you should pray for the best for her because if you are angry with her she won’t see good things.
“Allow her to present the person she wants to marry and if you are pleased with his religion and character, you allow her to get married”, he stated.
The complainant should be a respectful daughter, he added.
