Inspector-General Egbetokun Warns Against ‘Unauthorised’ Palliatives Distribution After Scores Of Nigerians Died From Stampedes
A devastating series of stampedes has struck Nigeria, resulting in the loss of at least 65 lives and injuring dozens more.
The incidents occurred in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija, during the distribution of palliatives and at a children’s funfair.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning against unauthorized distribution of palliatives and relief items.
He emphasized the dangers posed to public safety during these unorganized events, including the potential for stampedes and other incidents that could endanger lives.
The IGP has called on government officials, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations to work together to establish a comprehensive and organized framework for distributing palliatives.
He warned that negligence on the part of event organizers is criminal and would not be overlooked.
Recent incidents include a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, a similar incident at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja, and a palliative distribution event in Okija, Anambra State, all of which resulted in loss of life and injury.
