Abia, Kogi, Osun, and 8 Other Nigerian States Spend N9.84 Billion on Fuelling Generators and Vehicles
A recent review of budget performance documents has revealed that 11 Nigerian states spent a staggering N9.846 billion on fuelling generators and vehicles between January and September 2024. This represents a significant increase from the previous year.
State-by-State Breakdown On Vehicle, Generator, Other Fuelling
- Osun State spent N512.4 million on fuelling motor vehicles and N392.4 million on generators/plant.
- Katsina State spent N542.9 million on fuelling motor vehicles and N156.4 million on generators.
- Adamawa State spent N425 million on motor vehicle fueling and N164.4 million on plant/generator fueling.
- Ondo State spent N245.3 million on motor vehicle fueling and N652.8 million on plant/generator fueling.
- Other states, including Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, Anambra, Abia, Bauchi, and Bayelsa, also incurred significant expenses on fuelling generators and vehicles.
The significant rise in fuel costs can be attributed to the removal of fuel subsidies, which led to a surge in petroleum prices.

In some cases, the cost of fuelling generators and vehicles exceeded expenditures on critical sectors like agriculture, water facilities, and healthcare.
For instance, Bayelsa State spent N192.2 million on capital expenditure for its Agriculture ministry, while allocating N442 million for plant/generator fueling.
Similarly, Nasarawa State spent N1.5 billion on motor vehicle fuel cost, compared to N597 million on provision of water facilities.
