The Nigerian Police Force has withdrawn its personnel from the Osun State local government elections, citing heightened security threats and legal complexities.

The elections were scheduled to take place on February 22, 2025.

In a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police advised the Osun State government to suspend the elections immediately.

The police received credible intelligence indicating a likelihood of violence and significant security threats if the elections proceed.

The statement noted that various groups, including political elements and other interested parties, are mobilizing to instigate unrest and disrupt public peace.

The police assessed the current security landscape and determined that proceeding with the elections could escalate into widespread unrest, endangering lives and property.

Despite the withdrawal, the police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and upholding Nigeria’s democratic processes in accordance with the law.

The development comes amid controversy surrounding the polls, with the Attorney General of the Federation asking Governor Ademola Adeleke to put the elections on hold due to a recent court judgment.
