Poultry Farmer Association of Nigeria has expressed concerns over the declining sales of eggs in the country, citing rising economic hardships and low purchasing power among Nigerians.
The Jigawa State chapter of the association made this known during a courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi.
According to the association’s leader, Mr. Hussaini Gumel, the removal of fuel subsidy has significantly impacted the industry, leading to plummeting sales.
He attributed the decline in sales to the increasing economic hardships faced by many Nigerians, which has made it difficult for people to afford eggs.
The poultry farmers are struggling to keep their businesses afloat due to rising costs of production, including feed and other inputs.
Gumel lamented that chicken feeds are significantly cheaper in Jos, Plateau State, compared to Jigawa and many other states, making it difficult for poultry farmers in Jigawa to maintain profitability.
The association is seeking government intervention to prevent losses due to damaged products, as they lack essential infrastructure such as refrigerators and cooling devices to preserve their products in the hot weather.
They are also calling for training and capacity-building programs, particularly for women involved in the poultry business.
To boost demand and support the industry, Gumel urged the government to consider including eggs in the school feeding scheme, which would provide a stable market for their products.
The governor has assured the poultry farmers of his administration’s support, promising to look into the challenges facing the industry and work together to find solutions.
