A popular Nigerian TikTok creator, Umar Hashim—better known by his online alias Tsulange—has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Magistrate Court in Kano State over a viral skit that stirred controversy.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan at Gyadi Gyadi, found Hashim guilty of public misconduct after he posted a video of himself bathing on a public road while dressed in women’s underwear.

The case was filed by the Kano State Censorship Board, which deemed the act indecent and in violation of public morality laws.

Although Hashim received a one-year sentence, Magistrate Hassan ruled that the jail term could be commuted to a fine of ₦80,000. He was also ordered to pay an additional ₦20,000 to the Censorship Board to cover the costs of investigation and prosecution.

Hashim was arrested in June 2025 after the skit went viral, sparking debate on social media over the boundaries of creative freedom versus cultural and legal norms in northern Nigeria.

This case adds fuel to the ongoing conversation around digital expression, censorship, and the role of regulatory bodies in enforcing moral standards, particularly in more conservative regions of the country.
