Ahead of the general elections in 2027, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has authorized the registration of two further political parties, bringing the total number of political parties in the nation to 20.

Remember that at the commission’s first regular consultation meeting with political parties for 2026 on Thursday in Abuja, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan revealed the newly registered political parties.

Following a thorough examination procedure involving 171 political associations seeking registration, Amupitan revealed that the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) were approved.

He said that the Nigeria Democratic Congress was approved by the commission in accordance with a Federal High Court judgment, but only the Democratic Leadership Alliance satisfied all legal conditions.

In its guiding principles, the DLA stated that it would give national social development projects, youth involvement, and governance changes first priority.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which registered in accordance with a court order, characterized itself as a centrist political platform that prioritizes social justice, fair resource allocation, and bolstering democratic institutions.
