A landlord was charged for allegedly reporting tenants to the “Okija” Shrine in Lagos.

Landlord Okechukwu Chukwunahi, 44, has been taken to court.

 

The man was docked on Tuesday in am Ojo magistrate court, for reportedly ‘trial by ordeal’ The defendant was accused of conspiring and put on trial by Ordeal.

 

He, however, entered a not-guilty plea to the accusation.

 

He claimed that the defendant took his tenants’ names and submitted them to the shrine of the god “Arusi Okija” as a result of an argument with his tenants.

According to the prosecutor, Onyeka Ibeabuchi and Chimezie Ezeuka are the purported complainants.

 

He claimed that the shrine’s priest thereafter called the renters and demanded that they come in person before February 27 or risk their life.

 

The prosecution claimed that after initially referring the case to mediation and then a court in Badagry, the defendant turned to illegal measures of trial by torture at the shrine out of dissatisfaction.

 

He said that the offense was in violation of sections 127 and 411 of the Lagos State Criminal Code from 2015.

The defendant was granted bail in the amount of N300,000 with two sureties in the same amount by Magistrate L.J.K. Layeni.

 

The trial was postponed until March 20.

Anyone who oversees or preside over a trial by ordeal is punished under this clause as a felon and is subject to a ten-year sentence.
