The Federal Ministry of Education said in a statement released on Sunday that no candidate is excused from registering for or taking the two core topics according to the new policy on streamlined admission standards.
Despite recent modifications to the standards for admission into higher institutions, the Federal Government has reiterated that all students registering for their O’Level exams must take English Language and Mathematics.
The clarification was required due to misunderstandings of the new O’Level admissions structure, according to the statement issued by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations.
“The reform was introduced to promote flexibility, inclusiveness, and fairness in tertiary education admissions, ensuring that capable students are not denied access because of deficiencies in subjects unrelated to their chosen courses,” noted Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education.
Alausa stated ;
“The streamlining ensures that deserving students are not denied access to higher education due to credit deficiencies in subjects that are not directly relevant to their chosen fields of study,”
“The new framework corrects imbalances in the previous admission system and aligns with global best practices by allowing institutions to admit candidates into certain programs where credit passes in either subject are not mandatory, but all students must still register and sit for both,” he added.
The ministry emphasized that the change does not impact the need to study or take the subjects; rather, it solely impacts the admission requirements for particular programs.
