Nigerian lady is apprehended at a South African airport for fraud after being on the run for five years.
The Nigerian woman was apprehended by police at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport.
The suspect is accused of defrauding gullible job seekers and individuals hoping to become nurses.
Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the police spokeswoman, revealed this in a statement on Monday. He said the woman was detained on March 11, 2023, after arriving from Nigeria.
On Monday, March 13, she made an appearance at the Louis Trichardt magistrate’s court.
According to Mojapelo, the woman allegedly managed fake nursing colleges and illegally registered gullible students under the pretense that they were seeking nursing credentials.
“The victims were also assured of employment upon completion of their studies,” said Mojapelo.
The PPRO claimed that when it was discovered that the universities were fake, the woman’s allegedly fraudulent dealings were revealed.
“The students opened cases of fraud and theft under false pretences against the woman in Polokwane, Morebeng, Thohoyandou, Waterval and other places in Gauteng.”
“The suspect managed to evade arrest and had been on the run since 2017 after she fled to Nigeria,” he said.
The breakthrough, according to Mojapelo, occurred on Saturday when investigators from Makhado learned that the sought-after suspect was returning to South Africa from Nigeria and would arrive at OR Tambo International Airport at noon.
“The members pounced on her soon after she arrived at the airport,” he stated.
