Police Sergeant Appears in Court for Valentine’s Day Murder of Wife
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – A police sergeant, Ngudumane Hamlet Mahlalela, has appeared in the Protea Magistrates’ Court for allegedly murdering his wife, Jane Mashudu Mahlalela, also a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS), on Valentine’s Day.
The incident occurred on February 14, 2025, at their home in Protea Glen, Soweto.
According to reports, Mahlalela had an argument with his wife about her not sleeping at home the previous night, which was overheard by family members.
Shortly after, a gunshot was heard, and Mahlalela allegedly fled the scene with a minor child.
A manhunt ensued, but Mahlalela eventually surrendered to Moroka SAPS on February 18, 2025. The minor child was found safe at his aunt’s residence.
The case has been postponed to February 25, 2025, for a formal bail application hearing.
