US House Passes Bill to Ban Transgender Athletes from Competing in Women’s Sports

The United States House of Representatives has passed a bill that prohibits transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, sponsored by Rep. Greg Steube, R-Florida, aims to prevent biological males from participating in female athletics.

The bill, which passed with a 218-206 vote, would deny federal funding to educational institutions that allow biological males to compete in women’s sports.

Speaker Mike Johnson took to social media to express his support for the bill, stating that it’s a “great day in America” because House Republicans have ensured that men cannot compete in women’s sports. Johnson’s comments sparked controversy, with some accusing him of promoting transphobic views.

“Men are men, women are women, and men cannot become women. It’s just that simple,” Johnson said in his post.

The bill has received support from conservative groups, such as the Alliance Defending Freedom, which argues that allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports would “destroy fair competition and erase women’s athletic prospects”.

On the other hand, gay and transgender rights advocacy groups, including the Human Rights Campaign, have expressed opposition to the bill, stating that it would “deprive kids of the opportunity to participate alongside their peers” and expose them to harassment and discrimination.

“Today is a great day in America because House Republicans just passed @RepGregSteube’s Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act ensuring men cannot compete in women’s sports,” Johnson said.

The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces an uncertain future. To become law, it would need to overcome a potential filibuster and secure 60 votes.
