Brazil and Ecuador have secured their spots in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, joining defending champions Argentina among the South American teams earning automatic qualifications.

The two nations clinched their spots after Brazil edged Paraguay 1-0 and Ecuador held Peru to a goalless draw.

Vinicius Jr scored the winning goal for Brazil in the 44th minute, poking in a cross from Matheus Cunha. This win marked a successful home debut for new head coach Carlo Ancelotti. Ecuador, on the other hand, secured their place with a 0-0 draw against Peru, confirming their fifth appearance in the World Cup.

With these results, Brazil and Ecuador have guaranteed themselves a top-six finish in the South American standings, with 25 points each. Argentina, who had already qualified, tops the standings with 35 points from 16 games.

The top six teams in South America earn direct entries to the 48-team World Cup, while the seventh-placed team advances to an inter-confederation playoff.

The current standings show Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia occupying the remaining automatic qualification positions, while Venezuela is in seventh place, potentially heading for an inter-confederation playoff spot. The final two fixtures in September will determine the last World Cup spots.
