The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has a new start date.
Patrice Motsepe, President of CAF, announced the announcement on Sunday at a CAF conference in Morocco – a decision that may create controversy due to players’ club commitments at the time it begins on the new date.

The finals were originally scheduled for Ivory Coast, which still serves as host, but concerns about the weather in West Africa prompted the move.
“We took a lot of advice and we decided we cannot take a risk,” Motsepe told a news conference.
“We don’t want to run the risk of that our top competition is going to be washed out.
“January is not the best time because the European clubs do not want to release their players but we have no choice.”
Motsepe’s remaining qualifying matches slated for September have been postponed, freeing up space for Africa’s representative at this year’s World Cup to organize harder friendlies for better preparations.
