Recent politics in Nigeria cannot be understood only through speeches from politicians or activities inside government offices.

For millions of ordinary Nigerians, politics today is deeply connected to survival, food prices, security, jobs, electricity, and hope for the future.

Since the economic reforms introduced by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023, political conversations across the country have increasingly focused on how government decisions affect daily life.

From the people’s point of view, the economy is one of the most important political problems. The administration said that the elimination of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira were essential changes to save the economy and drive investment.

Government officials argue that these reforms are beginning to stabilize the economy and improve investor confidence.

However, the current situation has been difficult for a lot of Nigerians. Food prices are still high, transportation costs have increased significantly, and many families find it difficult to pay for necessities. Workers, traders, students, and small business owners nationwide are all still impacted by rising fuel costs.

There is a widening gap in opinion among common people. Some Nigerians think that although the reforms are difficult, they are essential to solving the country’s long-standing economic issues.

Others feel the government introduced harsh policies without creating enough support systems for poor and middle-class citizens.

Online and physical interactions reveal dissatisfaction with the growing expense of living and worries that the general public is not yet benefiting from economic expansion.

For Nigerians, security continues to be one of the most sensitive political topics.

Banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and intercommunal violence continue to pose a threat to civilians in various regions of the nation. While travellers are concerned about attacks on highways, farmers in rural villages frequently fear visiting their farms.

In states affected by violence, insecurity has damaged agricultural production and worsened food shortages.

Although the government regularly promises stronger action against insecurity, many citizens feel progress has been too slow.

The increasing influence of youth in Nigerian politics is another significant factor. Nigerian youths have been more politically conscious and vocal since the 2020 #EndSARS demonstrations.

Nowadays, a large number of young Nigerians publicly criticise leaders, demand accountability, and actively discuss governance on social media. Young people actively participated in the 2023 election, particularly by endorsing alternative political movements.

Even though the excitement from that election has reduced somewhat, many young citizens still see politics as a tool for change rather than something controlled only by old political elites.

Opposition politics in Nigeria have also experienced challenges recently. Efforts to build a united opposition ahead of the 2027 elections have faced internal disagreements and divisions among key political figures.

From the public’s point of view, this has disappointed those who were hoping for a more powerful political alternative that could successfully oppose the current party.

The government is still under criticism from civil society organizations and activists on matters including human rights, poverty, corruption, and governance. Recently, a number of organizations have issued warnings that public dissatisfaction is rising due to economic hardship and insecurity.

Many Nigerians feel disconnected from political leaders, believing that politicians enjoy privileges while ordinary citizens carry the burden of economic hardship.

Many Nigerians are strong and positive despite the challenges. People are still fervently debating the nation’s future in marketplaces, churches, mosques, universities, and internet forums.

According to some, Nigeria is going through a challenging transformation that may eventually result in economic growth and stability. Others worry that public confidence in government may keep eroding in the absence of improved security, accountability, and leadership.

From the people’s perspective, recent politics in Nigeria are therefore not just about elections or political parties. It is about the everyday struggle to survive, the desire for better governance, and the hope that the country’s enormous potential can finally benefit ordinary citizens instead of only the political class.
