Tankers that transport diesel instead of cooking oil are seized by NAFDAC.
After learning that two tankers intended to transport edible vegetable oil were actually being used to transport automotive gas oil (diesel) in Lagos, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) intercepted them.
Dr. Martins Iluyomade, the NAFDAC Director of Investigation and Enforcement, told reporters in Lagos on Monday that the development posed a major risk to food safety and public health.
During one of the agency’s most recent enforcement efforts in the state, he added, the discovery was made.
He claims that investigations showed that the two tankers, which were only supposed to carry edible vegetable oil, had been loaded with diesel in violation of food safety laws.
Iluyomade revealed that the two tankers and their drivers had been detained, and that investigations are still underway to ascertain the complete extent of the infraction and guarantee that the proper regulatory measures are implemented.
In accordance with international best practices for food safety, he emphasized that vegetable oil has no business being associated with gasoline or petroleum products, which is why the agency takes such matters seriously.
He also noted that any tanker designated for edible vegetable oil must be used exclusively for that purpose.
The director gave the public assurances that NAFDAC would intensify its enforcement actions and maintain a high level of vigilance to stop similar infractions from happening again.
