Ghana has reportedly deported 120 Nigerian nationals following a cybercrime raid that led to their arrest, bringing renewed attention to the fight against internet fraud and other forms of digital crime in West Africa.

The reported development highlights growing concerns about cybercrime, cross-border criminal activities, and the measures authorities are taking to tackle offences involving digital technology. It also raises questions about the welfare of Nigerians living in Ghana and the importance of ensuring that law enforcement operations respect due process.

Operation Cyberhunt: What Happened?

According to reports published on October 13 and 14, 2026, the repatriation followed an intelligence-led operation known as Operation Cyberhunt, coordinated by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with security and intelligence agencies from Ghana, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, said the operation led to the rescue of 120 Nigerian nationals who had allegedly been trafficked to Ghana and forced to work in cybercrime operations.

The Ghanaian authorities thanked the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence for helping facilitate the Nigerians’ return home.

Eight Other Individuals Face Possible Prosecution

While the 120 Nigerians were repatriated, Sam George disclosed that eight other individuals were being processed for prosecution.

However, authorities had not publicly provided full details of the specific offences the eight individuals were expected to face. Their identities and the precise circumstances surrounding their alleged involvement were also not disclosed in the reports available at the time.

Human Trafficking Allegations Raise Further Concerns

One important aspect of the operation is the allegation that the Nigerians were trafficked to Ghana and compelled to participate in cybercrime activities.

Human trafficking can involve deception, coercion and exploitation, including forcing people to participate in illegal activities. People found in suspected criminal operations may therefore have different circumstances: some may be suspected offenders, while others may be victims of exploitation.

The reported operation also highlights the need for Nigerians seeking employment abroad to verify job offers, recruitment agencies and travel arrangements before accepting opportunities that may expose them to exploitation.

Ghana and Nigeria Strengthen the Fight Against Cybercrime

Cybercrime remains a cross-border challenge that requires cooperation among law enforcement agencies, governments and international partners.

Online fraud can affect victims in different countries, while the people organising or carrying out fraudulent activities may operate from another jurisdiction. Cooperation between Ghana, Nigeria, the UK and the US during Operation Cyberhunt reflects the international dimension of such investigations.

Authorities must also distinguish between people suspected of organising criminal activities and those who may have been recruited or coerced into them. Fair investigations and due process remain important to ensuring accountability and protecting innocent people.

Conclusion

Ghana’s repatriation of 120 Nigerians following Operation Cyberhunt is a significant development in the reported crackdown on suspected cybercrime and human trafficking networks.

With 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, vehicles and other items reportedly recovered, the operation has drawn attention to the scale and complexity of cross-border criminal investigations.

Although the Nigerians have been returned to their home country, questions remain about the full circumstances of their recruitment, the alleged exploitation and the identities of those responsible for the suspected criminal operations.

As investigations continue, cooperation between Ghanaian and Nigerian authorities will be important in addressing cybercrime, protecting trafficking victims and bringing proven offenders to justice.
