After Justice Claudio Bonifazi, who presided over the hearing at a jail near Ancona, ordered the Italian to remain in jail while the investigation is ongoing, the defense attorney in the case, Roberta Bizzarri, made this known on Monday.

Bizzarri stated that Ferlazzo “offered his side of the facts and apologized,” and that Ferlazzo, who is white, stated that “there was no racial element” involved.

When asked if Ferlazzo was apologizing to the victim’s family, the lawyer replied, “Yes, to the family.”

Ferlazzo also took Ogorchukwu’s cell phone, which added to the robbery charge.

“Ferlazzo’s apologies aren’t enough; now only justice and not vendetta are required,” Orgochukwu’s family stated in a statement issued by their lawyer, Francesco Mantella.

“It’s tough to grasp what occurred,” Mantella said, adding that the suspect’s widow, Charity Oriachi, wanted to meet with him “face to face” to figure out why he killed her husband.

Ferlazzo, 32, was apprehended by police on July 29, just minutes after the seller was battered and left dead on a busy retail street in the beach town of Civitanova Marche as witnesses, including two who filmed the incident, looked on.

This week, an autopsy will be performed to ascertain the cause of death for Ogorchukwu.
