Cape Verde Makes History by Securing Their First World Cup Qualification
Cape Verde has made its first-ever World Cup qualifying appearance.
With 23 points, four more than second-place Cameroon, the victory guaranteed the island nation’s top berth in Group D.
They won their group in the World Cup qualifications before this.
Following a 3-0 victory over Eswatini on Monday, October 13, in Praia, the nation achieved a first-ever 2026 FIFA World Cup milestone.
With the win, the island nation moved up to the top of Group D with 23 points, four points ahead of Cameroon, the second-place finisher and most frequent World Cup participant in Africa. Angola, meanwhile, held Cameroon to a goalless draw in Yaoundé.

After Iceland made history at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Cape Verde, which has a population of just over 550,000, is now the second-smallest country to ever qualify for the tournament.
“Giving this happiness to these people is enormous,” an emotional coach Pedro ‘Bubista’ Brito said after the final whistle. “It’s a victory for all Cape Verdeans and, above all, for those who fought for our independence. It’s a special moment in this 50th anniversary celebration.”
Cape Verde has made its first-ever World Cup qualifying appearance.
“It’s too emotional. I embrace all Cape Verdean people, at home and across our great diaspora,” said Stopira, who scored the final goal. Team captain Ryan Mendes added, “Honestly, I don’t have the words to describe this moment. I’m very, very happy.”
A new chapter in Cape Verde’s football history will begin when the country joins Africa’s team in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
