The Federal Government has issued a warning to Nigerians to avoid consuming cow hides and skin, popularly known as “ponmo”, due to potential health risks.

According to the Minister of Livestock Development, Mukhtar Maiha, there are proven health implications associated with the consumption of ponmo.

Maiha explained that the warning is not only due to health concerns but also to prevent loss of revenue and job opportunities in the livestock sector. He noted that the hides and skin can create up to 700,000 jobs and generate around N23 billion.

The Minister revealed plans to establish standard abattoirs across the country, where every part of the animal would be utilized for both human consumption and developmental needs.

A substantial part of the ministry’s capital expenditure for the 2025 fiscal year will be dedicated to developing livestock infrastructure, including modern farms and ranches.

Under the Development of Nigeria Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy 2025-2030 (NLGAS 25), the minister aims to expand the livestock sector’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution from $32 billion to $74 billion by 2035.

This strategy focuses on 10 key pillars, including Livestock Value Chain Development, Animal Health and Zoonoses Control, and Finance and Insurance.
