A devastating flood caused by severe rainfall in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has claimed the lives of at least 21 people, with over 10 others still missing.

The incident occurred during a torrential downpour on Wednesday night, causing widespread destruction in Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities in Mokwa town.

According to the Acting Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Ibrahim Hussaini, over 50 residential houses were submerged and washed away with their occupants.

The agency, in collaboration with Mokwa Local Government, local divers, and volunteers, is conducting search and rescue operations to rescue survivors and recover corpses.

Three people, a woman and her two children, were rescued alive and are receiving treatment for wounds and shock at Mokwa General Hospital. The search and rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts to locate the missing persons and provide aid to those affected.

The extent of the destruction has plunged the community into mourning, with many families displaced and others searching for missing loved ones. The flood has also washed away farmlands, leaving many residents stranded.
