Nigerian students are outraged over the government’s allocation of less than 26% of the total 2025 budget to education.

The Alliance of Nigerian Students Against Neoliberal Attacks condemned President Bola Tinubu’s administration for underfunding the public education sector.

In a press statement, the group’s national coordinator, Joshua Temitope Oladepo, criticized the government’s implementation of student loans, which they believe has done more harm than good.

They demanded the immediate scrapping of the policy and urged the government to develop a working mechanism to improve investment in education.

The group also expressed concerns over Nigeria’s consistent failure to meet the UNESCO benchmark of 26% allocation of the total annual budget to education.

In fact, the country has never allocated more than 10% of its budget to education since 1999.

The students also showed solidarity with the #U13 students, who are facing persecution by the University of Ibadan Management for demanding their constitutional rights to free and quality education.
