A student of Osun State University has brought pride to the institution, his lecturers, and his parents after earning international recognition for developing an innovative device capable of detecting Lassa fever.
Philip Ayomide Ogundele, a 400-level biotechnology student at Osun State University (UNIOSUN), has been awarded a 950 USD international research grant by Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, for a creative proposal that will enhance Lassa fever detection and surveillance.
The grant was given to support Ogundele’s study proposal, “Wearable Biosensor Prototype for the Detection and Surveillance of Lassa Fever Infection in Low-Resource Settings,” according to a statement released by Ademola Adesoji, the University Public Relations Officer.
The project’s goal is to investigate novel methods for early disease identification and monitoring, especially in settings with low resources and limited access to medical facilities and diagnostic equipment.
Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, responded to the accomplishment by describing it as a testament to the school’s dedication to high-quality instruction, outstanding research, and student growth.

The groundbreaking innovation has attracted global attention for its potential to improve the early diagnosis of Lassa fever, a viral disease that remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria and several West African countries. Early detection is critical in reducing fatalities, preventing outbreaks, and improving patient outcomes.
The student’s achievement highlights the growing impact of young Nigerian innovators who are using science and technology to address pressing healthcare challenges. His success has been celebrated by the university community, where lecturers have praised his creativity, dedication, and commitment to solving real-world problems through research and innovation.
Parents and well-wishers have also expressed immense pride in the student’s accomplishment, describing it as a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the quality of education being delivered at Osun State University.
The international recognition further places the university in the spotlight as an institution that continues to nurture talented students capable of competing on the global stage. It also serves as an inspiration to other young Nigerians to pursue innovation, scientific research, and technological advancement.
The student’s remarkable achievement stands as a reminder that Nigerian youths possess the talent and ingenuity to develop solutions with global impact when given the right opportunities and support.
As congratulations continue to pour in from across the country and beyond, many hope the innovation will receive the investment, partnerships, and regulatory support needed to advance from prototype to widespread clinical use, potentially saving countless lives across Africa and beyond.
