An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Lagos State has sentenced a man, Idris Ashimiyu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of defiling an 11-year-old girl.

The judgment was delivered on Wednesday by Justice Abiola Soladoye, who convicted Ashimiyu on a one-count charge of defilement brought against him by the Lagos State Government. The court also ordered that his name be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.

How the Incident Happened

During the trial, the court heard that the survivor was 11 years old when the incident occurred and 13 at the time she testified.

According to her testimony, she knew Ashimiyu because he helped run errands and wash cars within their compound. She told the court that she was outside when he approached her and sexually assaulted her.

The court was also informed that the girl’s grandmother later found her with the defendant after going to look for her. The survivor further testified that Ashimiyu was taken to the police station following the incident.

Defendant Had Pleaded Not Guilty

Ashimiyu had pleaded not guilty to the charge during his arraignment.

In his defence, his lawyer, A.O. Ayode, called a witness identified as Ibrahim. The witness told the court that he knew Ashimiyu but was not present when the incident occurred, explaining that he had learnt about it from a neighbour.

The court subsequently considered the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence before reaching its decision.

Importance of Protecting Children From Sexual Abuse

The judgment highlights the importance of protecting children from sexual violence and ensuring that allegations of abuse are properly investigated and prosecuted.

Children may be particularly vulnerable when offenders are people they know or encounter in their neighbourhoods. Parents, guardians, schools and community members all have a role to play in creating safer environments for children.

Suspected cases of child sexual abuse should be reported to the appropriate authorities. Survivors should also receive the protection, medical care and psychological support they need, while their identities and privacy are safeguarded.

Conclusion

The life imprisonment sentence handed to Idris Ashimiyu underscores the seriousness with which the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court treated the offence after considering the evidence presented at trial.

The case also serves as a reminder that protecting children requires vigilance, timely reporting of abuse and access to justice for survivors.

Children deserve to grow up in safe environments, free from sexual violence, exploitation and abuse.
