Crystal Palace claimed another memorable Wembley victory on Sunday, defeating Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Community Shield.

The Eagles, who lifted their first-ever major trophy in May’s FA Cup final against Manchester City, twice came from behind before holding their nerve in the shootout.

Substitute Justin Devenny fired home the decisive penalty after goalkeeper Dean Henderson made two crucial saves and Mohamed Salah missed from the spot.

Liverpool’s £265m summer recruits made an instant impression. Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring with a composed finish before debutant Jeremie Frimpong added a second with a looping cross that found the net.

However, Palace refused to be overwhelmed. Jean-Philippe Mateta levelled from the spot after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr, and Sarr struck again in the second half, drilling home via the post after being set up by Adam Wharton.

The penalty drama swung Palace’s way early. Salah missed the opener, Henderson denied Alexis Mac Allister, and Palace’s takers kept their cool.

  • Penalty sequence:

  • Gakpo – Scored

Dean Henderson, Palace goalkeeper:

“I love the big moments. The homework we did on penalties was great. Two trophies in three months is incredible for this club.”

Oliver Glasner, Palace manager:

“Our reaction each time we went behind was fantastic. We stayed calm, kept believing, and took responsibility when it mattered.”

Arne Slot, Liverpool manager:

“We created plenty but conceded too many. The balance isn’t right yet, but it’s only the start of the season.”
