Novak Djokovic’s bid for his 100th career title was thwarted by unseeded Czech teenager Jakub Mensik at the Miami Open final on Sunday. The 37-year-old Serb’s defeat was marked by an apparent eye problem, which he refused to discuss, citing his reluctance to make excuses for his loss.

Djokovic’s eye issue became noticeable before the match, with what appeared to be a stye causing swelling around his right eye. Despite applying eye drops during a changeover in the first set, he seemed troubled by the infection throughout the match.

The record 24-time Grand Slam winner described the day as “weird,” citing the nearly six-hour rain delay and his overall subpar performance on the court. When questioned directly about the eye problem, Djokovic opted not to elaborate, instead choosing to congratulate his opponent on his victory.

Djokovic’s praise for Mensik was genuine, as he has been familiar with the young Czech player’s talent for several years. Mensik had previously trained at Djokovic’s club in Belgrade, and the Serb had predicted his potential to become one of the world’s top players.

The Miami Open final marked a stunning upset, with Mensik’s impressive performance earning him his first ATP Masters 1000 title. Despite his disappointment, Djokovic acknowledged the positive experience he had in Miami, expressing gratitude for the support he received from the crowd throughout the tournament.
